IMPERF PROOF. 17c Rose-Pink Kalayaan issue, top margin vertical imperforate Proof
pair. Small ding on bottom margin and clipped bottom left corner. Very scarce
and seldom offered. Referenced in Garrett: Many knowledgeable stamp
collectors and dealers in Manila assert that the illustrated stamp is a
proof, claiming that the hand-drawn black ink lines were customarily drawn by
inspectors during the Occupation as the plate proofs were checked for errors.
The printing is on stamp paper, and both the printing and paper are faded.

buried in Arlington National Cemetery on 4 August 1944. He was reburied in
Manila North Cemetery on 17 July 1946 before being moved to his final resting
place at the Quezon Memorial Shrine on 19 August 1979 (to coincide with his
101st birth anniversary). |

613. |
Scott N37 PROOF. Mint (NG). 5c Laurel
Puppet Republic Anniversary issue. Single right margin Imperforate and
corresponding Perforated Proof stamps. Commonly found rough perfs. Both
stamps showing Variety with extended lines on top left into margin. Very
fresh and fine. The first public announcement
of the Bureau of Communications stated that these stamps were to be issued
perforated and gummed. It is apparent that the Bureau attempted to perforate
the stamps, but the poor quality of the paper combined with the dullness of
the pins in the perforating machine made the task impossible to achieve. For
whatever reasons, the Bureau was unable to issue the stamps with gum.
Examples of the 5s value are found perforated (12x12-1/2), without gum, and
are proofs looted from the vault of the Manila Central Post Office during the
battle for the liberation of Manila. |

FIRST DAY COVER (2). 1943 BAHA Semi-Postal set on two Manila
circulating addressed first day covers. Left cover is the original first day
of this set with Manila (8 December 1943) Circular Date stamps. Second cover
dated (22 December 1943) when the stamps were re-released by the Postal
Authorities. Very nice combination covers. Note: Disappointed by
the poor sale of the three-value 'BAHA' semi-postal issue of December 8,
1943, the Bureau took the unprecedented step of re-releasing the stamps on a
Second First Day two weeks later on December 22, 1943. The following formal
announcement was included in The Tribune newspaper on December 17, 1943: To
give more impetus to the campaign to raise funds for the relief of the recent
flood sufferers, the Bureau of Communications has prepared a special stamp
canceller with red ink, in connection with the sale of postage stamps
overprinted with the inscription ВАНА-1943 and
corresponding denominations. Appropriate for the occasion, the bureau has
prepared the special stamp canceller for use on philatelic covers bearing
BAHA stamps only, presented for cancellation on December 22, 1943, the second
anniversary of the outbreak of the Greater East Asia War. |
