S1-41

12 May 1854
Sydney (Australia) to Manila

Provenance: Nestor Jacob
Mario Que Collection

Harmers London Auction - April 4, 1981

Comment: Letters under the half-ounce weight from Australia were subject to an inbound rate of 1-Real. Due to the implementation of new postal rates brought about by the introduction of postage stamps from February 1, 1854, it is more than likely that the Postal Officials assumed the postage from the port of addressee was equivalent to postage of an inland domestic letter. Hence the 5-Cuartos stamp was affixed to the letter and tied with a Circular Dotted Cancel. Manila (29 June 1854) Small Baeza Receiving Circular Date Stamp also applied on cover front.

Sc1-42

27 September 1854
Sydney (Australia) to Manila

Provenance: Maurice Burrus, Nestor Jacob
Mario Que Collection

David Feldman Auction - May 30, 1986

Comment: Letters under the one-ounce weight from Australia were subject to an inbound rate of 1-Real, Hence the presence of the handstamped numeral 1 (1-Real) due marking. However, confusion among postal officials concerning the postal rate led to the misuse of the proper due rate, incorrectly applying the 5-Cuartos stamp (making the inbound due rate 15-Cuartos short). Manila (23 January 1855) Small Baeza Receiving Circular Date Stamp also applied on cover front.
