MANILA TO MADRID (SPAIN)

Pair of 10-Cuartos (1-Real) Franked with Parilla Cancel and
Small Baeza Departure Circular Date Stamp
Handstamped ‘4Rs’ postage due on receipt in Madrid

Folded letter bearing a pair of the 10-Cuartos (1-Real de Plata) stamps to prepay the outbound single rate to Spain. The first issued stamps were not authorised for outbound mail. Hence, the presence of a ‘4Rs’ (4-Reales de Vellon) handstamp due mark. In accordance with the postal regulations then in effect, the Manila Central Post Office applied the double rate penalty on all unpaid mail. [The Philippine currency of 1-Real de Plata was equivalent to almost 2-Reales de Vellon of the Spanish currency]
