Comment:
During the early Spanish period, many
of the provincial towns either had no access to postal cancellers or chose not
to use them, evident from many covers, mainly addressed to Manila, only tied
with receiving cancels. In cases where covers were sent inter-city (other
than Manila), a few covers exist where both the source and destination towns
did not apply a cancel thus the stamp remained un-cancelled. In some cases,
stamps had a manuscript (pen) cancel applied. |

Comment: Cover addressed to
Ignacio Garreta, an engineer on the Spanish Warship
Jorge Juan, which made regular mail and supply runs between 1858 and 1862 to
support the Filipino soldiers in the French-Spanish Expeditionary Forces in
Indochina. A total of six covers are recorded bearing a 5-cuartos domestic
rate stamp, indicating that the Postal Authorities authorised the use of this
rate specific for this cause. |
