King Amadeo of Spain

1872

In 1872, a regular issue of five values arrived in Manila and were placed on sale. The stamps show the head of King Amadeo, facing almost to the front, in a single frame with labels at each of the four sides. The stamps were typographed on thin, white wove paper, by the Fabrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre, Madrid. They were engraved by H. Fernandez; perforated 14; and issued in sheets of 100 stamps, (ten rows of ten stamps). The values, now expressed in centimos de peseta, were reflective of the monetary unit of Spain, which was put into effect on October 19, 1868.

There are two distinct types of printing for this issue. The first type has the figures and letters of the value double-lined; as compared to the second type, in which they appear single-lined.

May 8, 1872

Three values of the set arrived from Spain and were released in Manila on May 8, 1872. It is worthy to note that the May 8, 1872 Decree by the Chief, Civil Government of the Philippines, authorising the new postal issues in centimos de peseta stated that the value of the 16-centimos stamp would be reduced to 12-4/8 centimos, (4-cuartos), until new stamps were received from Spain. It stated further that when stamps of the new value did arrive, the 16-centimos stamps could be exchanged or their sale could be suspended. The 16-centimos value was later replaced by the 12-centimos issue.

The remaining two values of the series were eventually received from Spain and placed on sale on October 15, 1872; with the following values:
