Reintegro Markings

The “Reintegro” markings were applied to stamps returned to the Post Office in exchange for newer issues. Translated, the word means ‘return or exchange’. Stamps are known with manuscript markings or overprinted in typeset. It is assumed that full sheets of 100 stamps were typeset overprinted, and that exchanged stamps occurring in less than a full sheet were probably marked in manuscript.

The typeset markings are printed diagonally in purple or violet, in two known types, both existing on the single die. Type 1 is at an angle of approximately 35˚ and Type 2 is at an angle of approximately 45˚. They are somewhat irregularly placed from one stamp to the next on the die.

Block of 16 from the Collection of Don Peterson with Typeset overprint showing different Types. Top row showing Type 2 (45˚) overprint. Bottom row: First four stamps showing Type 1 (35˚) and last four showing Type 2 (45˚) overprints.
