16-Centimos de Peseta
Gooding #44F1 Jean de Sperati Forgery. A dangerous forgery.
There is a weakness in the background caused by a broken horizontal frame
line to the right of the beard and opposite the final ‘A’ of ‘PESETA’. In the
second "R" of "CORREOS" there are three white spots in
the head and one in the tail and in the "S" there are three white
spots in the belly. In the "P" of "FILIPINAS" there is a
white spot at the top of the loop and another where the loop joins the
upright, there is a white spot in the head of the "A" and a white
spot in the bottomr right of the "S" in which there are two
indentations at foot. There are flaws in the lower frame line below the
second and third ‘I’ and the ‘N’ of ‘FILIPINAS’. Gooding #44F2 Forgery issued in Grey. Stamp exists with
Perforation 10 compared to Perforation 14 in the genuine stamp. The bottom
curve of the 'C' in 'CORREOS' ends in a point differing from the top curve.
The second 'R' in 'CORREOS' is larger and the downward stoke is less curved
than the genuine. The dashes around the borders are crude and wider spaced.
The value is single-lined compared to being double-lined in the genuine. The
horizontal line in 'A' of 'FILIPINAS' is broken and does not touch the
vertical stroke on the left side. Gooding #44F3 Issued in Blue with no margins, appearing to be imperforated.
There are no values in the value vertical tablets. The bottom curve of the
'C' in 'CORREOS' ends in a point differing from the top curve. The dashes
around the borders are crude and wider spaced. Exists with cork cancellation. Gooding #44F4 The vertical inner border lines extend to the
top of the outer border. There are horizontal lines in the upper corners. The
‘1’ of ‘16’ has no vertical staff and there is no period after ‘CENTS’.
Forged ‘Correos Union’ cancel postmarked January 21, 1872 (over three months before
stamps were placed on sale). Gooding #44F5 A crude imperforate forgery in black. First
‘R’ in ‘CORREOS’ is close to the ‘O’ and lower than the other letters. Over
shading below left eye. Borders are crooked and letters are slanted and of
poor quality. Erratic, non-uniformed lines in each corner. |
