Zambales Tribunal Cancellation

Zambales was formerly organized in 1572 after its exploration by Don Juan de Salcedo, the intrepid Spanish explorer. The old province included the coastal towns from Cape Bolinao in the north to Subic Bay in the south.

The name of the province is derived from its earliest inhabitants, the Zambals. They worship spirits called "anitos", thus they were referred to as "Sambali" from the Malay word samba, meaning "to worship". The term was later Hispanicized to "Zambal".

Among the earliest towns are Masinloc, organized in 1607 and it was the first provincial capital. The present capital Iba, was organized in 1611 and Sta. Cruz was formed a year later, in 1612.

Bolinao, along with six other towns in the northern portion of Zambales (down to Infanta) were ceded to Pangasinan in 1903, due to their proximity to Lingayen, the capital of Pangasinan.

Between 1863 and 1864, a special Tribunal cancellation was used in three cities of  Zambales, namely: Bolinao, Santa Cruz and Masinloc. The large, oblong cancel has four rows of small squares on the top followed by Zambale / Tribunal de / Town Name, split across three lines.

This cancellation is known on the 5-cuartos stamp issues of 1861 to 1863 (Scott #s 12-14).
